Built by the Budd Company in 1948 as sleeping car 402 Silver Larch with 16 open sections for the "California Zephyr," jointly operated by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, Denver & Rio Grande Western, and Western Pacific. Rebuilt to 48-seat coach in 1964. Number changed to 4743. Acquired by Amtrak in 1971. Number changed to 4806. Rebuilt to Heritage coach 4740 in 1981. Acquired by St. Louis Chapter-NRHS 1994, mechanically upgraded, interior improved, and original "California Zephyr" livery restored 2002. The Silver Larch features 48 coach seats and 2 large restrooms. |
