| American Rail Excursions, Inc. is proud to present
another addition to our fine family of beautifully restored shining stainless
steel streamlined cars, Silver Quail. The Silver Quail is a former
CB&Q RR eleven double bedroom sleeping car that was assigned to the
California Zephyr. The Burlington employed Silver Quail to utilize the
Pullman Company's Tourist Sleeper Concept.
Silver Quail was built in 1952 by the Budd Company for the CB&Q RR and operated until 1971. Amtrak operated Silver Quail from 1971 until 1983. The car was then rebuilt for service on Amtrak's Auto Train where it remained in service until 1997. It was purchased in 1997 by its current private owner, The Silver Sleeping Car Company. Silver Quail was placed in an extensive rebuilding program from 1997-1999. |
| Although outwardly, Silver Quail looks
pretty much like it was built and configured, many modifications and
improvements have been made. To ensure your safety, a thorough mandatory
40 year teardown inspection and rebuilding of the car and trucks has
been completed. The hallways of the Silver Quail have been stripped and
painted back to its original color. FRA233 safety glazing has been added
throughout. All bedrooms and all hallway windows have been upgraded to
emergency exit type. Smoke detectors have been installed as well as
2-20lb. Tri-Class fire extinguishers. In addition to the safety and
mandatory upgrades, new carpet and upholstery have been installed.
The Silver Quail is unique in that it was one of the very few railcars produced that was built with eleven double bedrooms. Each double bedroom features a short sofa, individual lounge chair, and oak fold-down table or long sofa and oak fold-down table. By night, the short or long sofas convert into a lower bed. The upper bed is stowed away against the ceiling or wall and is repositioned for sleeping at night. Each double bedroom features its own private (annex) washroom, with a fold-down sink, toilet, lighted wall mirror, and 110 volt convince outlet. The Silver Quail has been modified to include a full size shower and changing room at the vestibule end of the car. Also at the vestibule end of the Silver Quail a full stainless steel buffet has been added which includes a microwave oven, coffee maker, refrigerator, sink, counter and cabinets. |
| Some additional functional modifications
include: •Full under car freeze protection for winter use •Full retention for all 11 double bedrooms, including 11 new Microphor toilets •Electric baseboard heat throughout the car with individual thermostats for each room •Air conditioning with individual room controls •A newly constructed full-size stainless steel shower with changing area |
A 65KW Stadco generator and automatic transfer switch have also been added to ensure our guests will always have electrical power, even if the rest of the train does not. The 250 gallon fuel capacity will guarantee many hours of uninterrupted comfort Another
enhancement to Silver Quail is the newly installed stainless steel buffet
area. The buffet features stainless steel cabinets for food and utensil
storage, a sink, microwave oven, refrigerator and commercial automatic coffee
maker. |
