Kansas City
has twice been voted "Barbeque Capital of the World,"and
is considered a key player in the development of jazz. When Prohibition
stifled many of our nation's parties in the 1930s, booze continued
to flow here. KC's alcohol-induced nightlife brought jazz musicians
from all over the country, and their music flourished. Today's Kansas
City maintains its big, bad blues-and-jazz reputation, especially in
the 18th & Vine historic district, which features a jazz museum. For
our Club members, however, the biggest attraction (literally and figuratively)
is the magnificent Kansas City Union Station (KCUS). This huge building
was fully restored and reopened in 1999, and has become very popular.
It's also used by Amtrak for their Southwest Chief and two round-trips
a day between K.C. and St. Louis/Chicago. KCUS now has a science center,
national traveling exhibits, an IMAX 3-D movie theater, shops and
restaurants. Most importantly, however, is the new "KC Rail Experience,"
which opened in September of 2005. The major new exhibit is a passenger
train that includes an ex- Milwaukee Road E-unit, RPO car, diner,
sleeper, and an ex-Great Northern roundend observation/parlor car
named Going to the Sun Mountain. And there's an ex- Kansas City Southern
FP-9 loco, in operating condition. In addition, there are two diesel-loco
simulators, both recently donated by BNSF, and about 20 "talking
statues," which tell about experiences with railroading, including
KCUS's architect, a locomotive engineer, an RPO clerk and assorted
other workers. While we're here, there will also be a huge model railroad
on display. We plan to set up a special group tour of this classic,
major railroad station. Cost per person includes round-trip railfare
on Private Varnish Rail Cars, complimentary premium beverage and snack
service included en-route meal service both ways, and premium hotel
stay. Museum admission is an option.
